Summer Series 2014
For this year’s summer programming, the EYC held a number of weekly day trips for youth. We organized trips to Skyzone Indoor Trampoline, Ripley’s Aquarium, YTV’s Beach Bash and organized a summer BBQ for the community. Twenty-five youth from all parts of Toronto got to participate in the activities for little to no cost. They made new friends and memories, while fostering a more inclusive and diverse community of Eritrean youth.
The first trip was to Skyzone. The group, made entirely of boys, went straight for the Sky Slam, also known as the basketball nets, where they stayed for a considerable part of their 90 minute jump time. They were also enthusiastic on the dodgeball courts. But 90 minutes of jumping is exhausting so the boys refuelled on some pizza before heading home.
The EYC heard about the YTV Beach Bash from Kids Up Front. The eponymous children’s television channel was hosting a beach party at Cherry Beach to be filmed and aired on television the following weekend. It was not only a free, family-friendly party, but included musical performances, games, food and was hosted by Nick Cannon! Several lucky families had the chance to attend and said they had a great time!
Between all of the activities, we organized a Summer BBQ open to the entire Eritrean-Canadian community. The weather was not cooperating, but many youth, friends and family braved the rain to attend and we managed to stay dry under our gazebo. The Eritrean music was loud and the zil zil was delicious, so we rate the BBQ a success! At the BBQ we also had the community vote on a logo submitted for the N2 Project Logo contest. Congratulations to Adam Yunus for designing the winning logo and winning $100! A big thank you to the staff and Board Members for buying food, bringing games, sports equipment and music and speakers.
Ripley’s Aquarium was the last hosted day trip and appeared to be the favourite. Fourteen youth got to experience the wonders of the water with the EYC. They got to pet Horseshoe Crabs, watch sharks swim overhead and learn about species of underwater animals they did not know existed. It was an educational and entertaining day indeed!
We would like to thank Ripley’s and Skyzone for being great hosts, as well as Kids Up Front for early and exclusive access to the YTV Beach Bash.
